The Power of Unity
Social photo and information project, dedicated to the Ukrainian community in the Netherlands and interaction with the locals
Lera Manzovitova (word of the author)
“In March 2022, I found myself in the Netherlands with my 9 year old daughter. Warm jackets from Polish humanitarian aid, 2 small backpacks, my daughter's favorite toy dog and my camera - this was the luggage that arrived with us. And the inner baggage: emptiness and shock at what was happening. I was petrified as I made emergency decisions to evacuate and adjust to the new reality. For the first time my emotions found an outlet only in April 2022: when I was present as a photographer at the March of Ukrainian Mothers in Amsterdam. That's when the first tears happened. I looked into the eyes of women who felt the same pain, confusion and fears about the future as I did. Who couldn't stand by while universal injustice was happening. And came alive. Since then, being among socially active, concerned citizens has become a necessity for me. I continued to document rallies, exhibitions, concerts, auctions and other charitable events, as well as cultural activities.
In times of crisis and uncertainty, I can say from my own experience that it is very important to go beyond individual experiences, to feel a part of something bigger, to realize that even when you are abroad, you are making your contribution to justice in your native country. And the contribution of Ukrainians in the Netherlands is colossal, and is not counted only in tons of humanitarian aid and hundreds of cars. I am sure: it will be important for each of my compatriots, who found themselves here by choice or forced, to realize this fact, the effectiveness of our unity, the active growth and development of our community. I hope, the photo exhibition will strengthen the sense of belonging to a common goal, highlight the support of the local community and the strong friendships formed with the Dutch.”

The essence of the project
Since russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Netherlands has provided Ukraine with enormous comprehensive support: military, diplomatic, economic, and humanitarian. The Netherlands became an empathetic environment for the formation of one of the most close-knit, socially and culturally active communities of Ukrainians not only in Europe but also in the world. Currently, around 117.000 Ukrainians are registered here. Numerous charities and public associations are making great efforts to help Ukraine and Ukrainians in times of war aggression, support national identity and promote Ukrainian culture.
This project highlights the stories of Ukrainian community leaders, volunteers, war veterans and Dutch individuals who have supported Ukraine during these difficult times. The exhibition includes personal stories and reportage photos taken by over 2.5 years of photo volunteering.
